Charter schools are tuition-free public schools that are open to all students. Charter schools started to address the needs of families who were not being served or who were unhappy with the traditional school district, but who could not afford a private school. Charter schools are authorized by a University or local school district and are required to meet all of the same requirements and follow the same laws as traditional districts. In addition, charter schools are accountable to their authorizers for achievement, for managing a budget, and for following all laws.
